CURRENCY IN ZIMBABWE

CURRENCY:  The Unit of currency in Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwe Dollar (Z$) which is divided into 100 cents.  Notes are in denominations of Z$500, 100, 50, 20, 5, and 2.  Coins are in denominations of Z$5, 2 and 1 and 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 cents.  Local regulations prohibit the import or export of local money.

CURRENCY REGULATIONS:  You may bring in any amount of foreign currency in bank notes but the total amount must be declared to Customs at entry, otherwise only the equivalent of $200.00 will be allowed to be re-exported.  Any amount of traveler's checks may be brought into the country and re-exported.  Local regulations prohibit the import or export of local money.  It is illegal to exchange foreign currency for local currency with anyone other than an authorized currency dealer affiliated with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.  Authorized currency dealers include the major banks such as Standard Chartered and Barclays.  Street venders and private individuals may also offer this service but they should be avoided.  Travelers engaged in illegal money transactions and observed by the police will be immediately arrested and jailed.

PAYMENTS:  By law you have to pay all the costs incurred in Zimbabwe in foreign currency.  Using traveler's checks is the safest way of doing this.  You should also bring a number of small notes for making roadside purchases, etc., any change will be given to you in Z$ - which are at the current time virtually worthless.  Because Zimbabwe has recently been in the grips of economic turmoil and skyrocketing inflation it is best not to exchange any of your foreign currency into Z$.  Major international currencies are accepted but due to rampant counterfeiting, no one in Zimbabwe is currently accepting US $100 dollar notes.

CREDIT CARDS:  All major credit cards may be used at hotels, restaurants, car hire agencies and most shops.  Visa and MasterCard are the most widely supported.  Credit cards are not accepted at petrol filling stations.

BANKS:  Banks in Zimbabwe are open for business during the following hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:00 - 15:00
Wednesday 8:00 - 13:00
