KwaZulu Natal is the Eastern most province of South Africa. It is also known as the garden province of South Africa characterized by a subtropical coastline, grasslands in the east and the Drakensberg mountain range in the west. The name KwaZulu means Kingdom of the Zulu and is named for the proud African people who have lived in the area for centuries. The province was formed in 1994 by the merger of Natal, one of the four former South African provinces, and KwaZulu a former black homeland created for Zulu-speaking people as part of the South African government’s system of apartheid, or separation of the races.
KwaZulu Natal forms South Africa’s east coast stretching from Port Edward in the south to the Mozambique boundary in the north. From its early days the province has been the scene of many fierce battles from the contention between the Zulus and the Voortrekkers, the British Empire and the Boer settlers (Anglo-Boer War) and the Zulus and the British Empire. The province is one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations offering a rich diversity of nature, culture and history, set against a colorful backdrop of sun, sea, mountain and sky. Its battlefields are a popular tourist attraction. The province can be divided into three geographic zones: a lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast: rolling plains in the central section know as the Midlands with its undulating hilly plateau rising towards the west and the mountainous area of the west with the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains rising over 9000’ skyward. Today KwaZulu Natal is famous for being a melting pot of African, European and Indian cultures.
Our malaria-free area contains some of the best and most unique safari hunting in all of South Africa. With over 30 species of game, the KwaZulu Natal province holds some of the most sought after species in the country including Nyala, Red Duiker, Livingstone Suni and Common Reedbuck.
